Play-to-Earn (Play2Earn)

Crypto Glossary: Play-to-Earn (P2E)

Definition: Play-to-Earn (P2E), also known as Play2Earn, is a revolutionary gaming model within the cryptocurrency and blockchain space. Unlike traditional gaming models that rely on advertising and in-game purchases for monetization, P2E allows players to earn tangible value based on their time and skills invested in playing blockchain-based games. It is a fundamental concept within the emerging GameFi ecosystem, which combines blockchain technology, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), financial elements, and gaming mechanics to reward players with cryptocurrency tokens and in-game assets for their active participation.

Key Terms and Concepts:

  1. Blockchain-based Games: Video games built on blockchain technology that enable players to earn cryptocurrency rewards and digital assets through gameplay.
  2. In-Game Assets: Virtual items, tokens, characters, accessories, or NFTs acquired by players as rewards within P2E games.
  3. Crypto Tokens: Digital currencies or tokens, often based on blockchain technology, that players can earn and exchange for real-world value.
  4. Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs): Unique digital collectibles that represent ownership of in-game assets and can be bought, sold, or traded on blockchain marketplaces.

P2E Mechanics and Examples:

  • Players engage in specific in-game activities, complete tasks, or participate in the game’s ecosystem to earn rewards.
  • Earnings may include generating NFTs, farming the game’s native cryptocurrency, staking, or contributing to the in-game economy.
  • The potential to earn is influenced by factors such as gameplay, player skills, time invested, and market demand for acquired assets.

Axie Infinity: An Ethereum-based blockchain game that popularized the P2E concept by combining blockchain gameplay elements with a Pokémon-inspired game. Players collect and breed digital pets called “Axies,” which are NFTs, and engage in battles to win rewards. In-game assets, such as Axies and tokens like Smooth Love Potion (SLP) and Axie Infinity Shard (AXS), can be traded on exchanges or NFT marketplaces, offering real-world value.

Play-to-Earn Impact: P2E games, like Axie Infinity, have enabled players worldwide to earn substantial income, particularly in regions affected by economic challenges. For example, players in the Philippines and Vietnam have leveraged P2E gaming to generate significant monthly earnings, transforming gaming from a hobby into a source of income.

NFT Games: Play-to-earn is driving the growth of NFT games, including titles like Lost Relics, Splinterlands, CryptoBlades, DogemonGo, and Sorare. The NFT market has witnessed rapid growth, exceeding $2.5 billion in sales in 2021, with the potential to disrupt traditional industries.

As the P2E model continues to gain momentum, it represents a significant shift in the gaming industry, where players are not only entertained but also financially rewarded for their active participation in blockchain-based games.
